The book exhibition «The Fascinating World of Arthur Conan Doyle» has been organized in the Hall of World Literature, dedicated to the 165th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding English writer, doctor, creator of one of the most popular characters of all time -detective Sherlock Holmes.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on May 22, 1859, into an Irish Catholic family. In 1881, after graduating from the medical faculty of the University of Edinburgh, he practiced for a while in Southsea. Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the brightest representatives of neo-romanticism in English literature of the ХІХ and ХХ centuries. He gave the world a rich literary heritage in the form of fantastic, adventure, historical and humorous works.

In 1882, A. Doyle defended his dissertation, became a doctor of medicine, but by the age of 30 he left the medical profession to pursue literary creativity. His first stories, «Secrets of the Sasassa Valley» (1879), «American History» (1879), as well as the magazine «Bloemensdan Ravine» and «My Friend the Murderer», were published in magazines. He travels a lot, practices as a ship's doctor in the Arctic on a whaling ship, and serves as a field surgeon during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).

In 1886, Conan Doyle began work on a novel about Sherlock Holmes. It was first published as part of Beaton's weekly in 1887 under the title «A Study in Crimson Tones». In 1888, the novel was already published as a separate edition, illustrated by Charles Dale, Arthur's father. In total, the adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson occupy four novellas and five collections of short stories. «The Sign of Four» (1890), were collected in the collection «The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes» (1891), «The Records of Sherlock Holmes» (1893), «The Hound of the Baskervilles»  (1902), «The Return of Sherlock Holmes» (1905) and «Valley of Horrors» (1915). In 1912, Doyle wrote an incredibly exciting fantasy novel called «The Lost World», which was later filmed many times.

Most of the film adaptations of the writer's work are dedicated to Sherlock Holmes. Other works by Arthur Conan Doyle have also been adapted into films. His pen includes fantasy novels and the internet «The Discovery of Raffles Howe» (1891), «Marakat's Abyss» (1927), etc. In 1926, two volumes of the  «History of Spiritualism» were published. In addition to prose, Doyle also wrote poetry, and published three collections of his poetry.

The writer spent the second half of the 1920s traveling, visiting all continents, without ceasing his active journalistic activities. Conan Doyle died of a heart attack on July 7, 1930 at his home in Crowborough, Sussex.

From the second half of the 1910s to the end of his life, Doyle was an active supporter and propagandist of the ideas of spiritualism. In the memory of his contemporaries, the writer remained an unsurpassed master of the detective genre, a follower of Edgar Poe, an amateur mystic. For his contribution to the development of literature, Arthur Conan Doyle was awarded the nobility and the title of knight. The work of Conan Doyle has been translated into many languages of the world. They have been filmed many times.

The book exhibition from the fund of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan presents the works of A.K.Doyle, as well as literature about him in Kazakh, Russian and English.
