A book exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the birth of English writer, fantasist, Nober Prize winner Doris May Lessing was organized in the hall of world literature.
Doris May Lessing is an English writer, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature and a feminist. She was born in Kermanshah, Persia (present-day Iran) on October 22, 1919. Her years spent in the African wilderness proved to be an inexhaustible source of inspiration for her writing. In 1949 she published her first novel Grass Sings. A chronicle of apartheid Rhodesian society, it was received with great acclaim. In 1962 the novel The Golden Notebook, considered a classic of feminist literature, was published. "The Instructions for Descent into Hell (1971) is one of the first works of the writer written in the genre of science fiction.
Between 1979 and 1983 Lessing published a series of fantasy novels, Canopus in Argos, in which she constructs a utopian future world divided into six major zones and populated by male and female archetypes. The zones described represent certain "levels of being": "Chicasta" (1979), "Marriages Between Zones Three, Four, Five" (1980), "Experiments on Sirius" (1981), "Creating a Committee of Representatives for Planet Eight" (1982), the latter of which was the basis for an opera written in 1988 by composer Philip Glass. The final novel of the cycle, Documents Relating to Sentimental Agents in the Volien Empire, was published in 1983.
In 1985 Lessing published the satirical novel The Good Terrorist about a group of London revolutionaries. The novel was favorably received by critics. In 1988, a landmark book for Doris Lessing, The Fifth Child, was published. It is recognized as the highest achievement of the writer in the late period of her work. It tells the story of a child with autism and his family's relationship to him. In the 1990s she published two autobiographical books, In My Skin and Walking in the Shadows. In 1996, after an eight-year hiatus, she published Love, Love Again, which is a kind of anthropological study of the phenomenon of "love. In 1999, the futurological novel Mara and Dan. The novel Ben among Men, a sequel to The Fifth Child, was published in 2000. In 2007, Doris Lessing writes the work "The Rift." The book can be attributed to feminist themes.
In June 1995, Lessing D. was awarded a doctorate from Harvard University. In December 1999, Doris Lessing was included in the last list of persons to be honored in the past millennium with the Order of the Chevaliers of Honor, which honors figures in the sciences and the arts for "special service to the nation. In 2001, she received the David Cohen Award. In 2007, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Lessing DM died on November 17, 2013, in London.
The exhibition presents works of the writer in English and Russian from the collection of the National Library of Kazakhstan.
