On December 1, 1991, the first national presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan. According to their results, N.A. Nazarbayev, who received the absolute support of the people, was elected President of the country.

In his speech at the inauguration ceremony of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbaev said: "Not every generation gets to be witnesses and participants of such tremendous historical changes, which you and I are experiencing. The idea that unites us and leads us forward is the construction of a free sovereign democratic state. The citizens of the Republic, for the first time in a thousand-year Kazakh history, voted for it on December 1, electing their President by popular vote.

Today we can confidently say that the concepts of "Independence" and " Yelbasy" are inextricably linked, since all the key achievements of sovereign Kazakhstan are the result of his activities as the country's leader.

To the main and indisputable achievements of the state policy of Yelbasy can be attributed the construction of a modern state with a market economy and stable political system, the international legal registration of borders, the creation of an effective model of interethnic and interfaith harmony, the development and implementation of long-term development strategies "Kazakhstan-2030" and "Kazakhstan-2050" and others.

In the article "Lessons of a historical personality", the Head of State K.K. Tokayev noted: "Nursultan Abishevich is rightly recognized and respected by the entire world community as an outstanding statesman and a unique reformer, who managed to look beyond the horizon of tomorrow! This is a great personality who created the history of an independent country with his own hands! Thanks to Yelbasy, Kazakhstan has become an authoritative and successful member of the international community.

In recognition of the historical merits of N.A. Nazarbayev, a state holiday - the Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan - was established in 2011.
