In the reading room named after Oraz Zhandosov of the Kazakhstan Kitaptary Service, a book exhibition «Ulttyk rukhtyn askaktauy» was organized, dedicated to the memory of the tragic December 1986 events in Almaty.

This year marks the 37th anniversary of the historic events of December 1986. The protests demonstrated the people's desire for freedom and sovereignty. The heroism of the participants in the December events, which became a harbinger of independence, is forever inscribed in the history of our statehood. The events of December 1986 are of great importance for understanding many modern processes in the republic. They had a significant impact on the formation and development of Kazakhstan as a sovereign state. On December 16, 1991, the Supreme Council adopted the Law «On Independence and State Sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan». Independence Day of Kazakhstan is a national holiday and is celebrated annually on December 16-17.

In 2006, on the 20th anniversary of the December events, a monument was erected in Almaty as a tribute to the historical events of 1986. «Tauelsizdik tany – Dawn of Freedom». The monument, installed at the intersection of Satpayev-Zheltoksan streets, has become a symbol of courage and perseverance, faith and hope. The independence that Kazakhstan gained after the December events showed that the state not only became independent, but also began to compete worthily in the world, freely manage its future.

The book exhibition «Ulttyk rukhtyn askaktauy» consists of two sections. The first section «Zheltoksan: anyz ben akikat» presents from the fund of the National Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan: encyclopedias, biographical reference books, books reflecting the December events of 1986. Further, documents on the participants, materials of republican scientific and practical conferences containing scientific research by Kazakhstani scientists, their reports and speeches are exhibited.

The second section of the book exhibition «Zheltoksan okigasy-tauelsizdik bastauy» exhibits books, works by historians, articles by authors telling about the tragic pages of this period in the history of our country.

The purpose of the book exhibition is to familiarize readers with materials reflecting the December events that became pivotal in the fate of every citizen of Kazakhstan and to foster a sense of patriotism and love for the Motherland among the younger generation.
