There in the hall for scientific workers after U.M. Sultangazin is organized the book exhibition named “Kazak arkheologiyasynyn sardary” dedicated to the 80-th birthday of the scientist-archeologist, academician of the NAS of the RK, honored figure of Kazakhstan, winner of the State prize of the RK Karl Moldakhmetovich Baipakov.

Baipakov Karl Moldakhmetovich was born on November 17, 1940 in Talgar city of  the Almatinskaya region. In 1963 he graduated from the faculty of history of the Leningrad state university.

In 1963-1989 he is the post-graduate student, senior scientific worker of the Institute of history, archeology and ethnography after Ch.Ch.Valikhanov of the Academy of sciences of  the Kazakh SSR. In 1966 he defended the candidate dissertation by the theme: “The medieval cities and settlements of the Semirechye region of the VII- XII cc.”, in 1986 he defended the doctoral dissertation: “The medieval city culture of Southern Kazakhstan and the Semirechye of the VI-th – beginning of the XII-th cc.. (the dynamics and main stages of development)”. In 1989-2010 he is the correspondent member of the NAS of the RK, director of the Institute of archeology after A.Kh.Margulan. in 1991 he headed the expedition of the UNESCO “Zhibek zholy”, in 2011 – chairman of the Public association “The Kazakhstani archeological society”. In the last years of his life he was director of the International centre for nearing cultures under the aegis of the UNESCO. From 1966 K. Baipakov taught at the Kazakh state university after S.M. Kirov (now the Kazakh national university after Al-Farabi).

K.Baipakov was a large specialist of the medieval archeology of Kazakhstan and the Central Asia. His full-sacle researches of such monuments like Otrar, the settlement of Kuiryktobe, the necropolis of Kostobe, the Buddhist temple at the Koilyk settlement and many others, widened and enriched the source base of the ancient history of Kazakhstan. One of  the most famous of his discoveries was the determination of the age of Almaty city.

Under the scientific leadership of K. Baipakov there defended more than 40 candidates  and doctors of science. He is the author of more than 500 publications, multiple monographs, 6 study manuals: “The ancient Otrar” (1972), “By the traces of the ancient cultures of Kazakhstan” (1990), “The archeology of Kazakhstan” (1993), “The medieval cities of Kazakhstan on the Great Silk way” (1998), “Archeology of Kazakhstan: The study manual for students of universities and colleges” (2006), “Ancient and medieval urbanization of Kazakhstan” (by the materials of researches of the Southern-Kazakhstani complex archeological expedition) (2012), “The outstanding archeological monuments of Kazakhstan” (2014) and others.

The scientific activity of K. Baipakov was marked by the state awards: the orders “Parasat” (2003), Barys of the 3-rd degree (2010), the memorable medal of the UNESCO “For the contribution into world science” (2005), the silver medal after A.Baitursynov of the Association of universities and colleges of the RK “The best author” (2008), the medal “20 years of independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan” (2011), the jubilee medal “For the contribution into development of the Southern-Kazakhstani region” (2012). The winner of the State prize (1988, 2017), the winner of the Independent prize “Platinum Tarlan” (2007). The honored figure of science and technics of the RK, academician of the National academy of sciences of the RK.

Karl Baipakov died on November 23, 2018.

There at the book exhibition “Kazak arkheologiyasynyn sardary” out of the fond of National library of the RK are presented the materials about the life and activity of Karl Baipakov, his scientific works, articles, the abstracts of theses of dissertations and also the recollections of the scientists on the pages of the periodical press.
